New Faces of Green Mountain Farm-to-School

Green Mountain Farm-to-School (GMFTS) welcomed five new AmeriCorps members, one returning AmeriCorps member, and two new full-time staff this past August.

In 2015, Vermont ranked fourth among states for the most AmeriCorps per capita and GMFTS is helping to continue the excellent tradition. Since 2009 GMFTS has hosted 34 AmeriCorps members. Last year the AmeriCorps conducted 209 after-school programs, 43 farm field trips, 437 in-class workshops, and 127 taste tests – over 60 percent of schools in the Northeast Kingdom received programming from GMFTS and the AmeriCorps members.

This year’s members, who hail from all over the continental U.S., are, again, serving as farm-to-school coordinators in 27 schools across the Northeast Kingdom. They are planting school gardens, providing nutritional and agricultural education in and out of the classroom, and working to source more local food in school cafeterias.

GMFTS has also added two full-time staff members. Rebecca Mitchell joined the team as the consumer education coordinator after spending two years as an AmeriCorps Member, and Shane Rogers has joined as the communications, outreach, and development associate, moving from Washington, D.C.
