Green Mountain Farm-to-School (GMFTS) is a leader in the growing farm-to-school movement in Vermont. Our mission is to strengthen local food systems in Vermont by promoting positive economic relationships, education, and access between schools, farms, and communities.
We create and sustain healthy communities by working across the food system with capacity building, resource development, and technical assistance through our Farm-to-School program, Farm Direct food hub, and Lunchbox food truck.

The Orleans Elementary School Community Cooking Club wrapped up with a colorful and highly nutritious wheat berry salad. Chocked full of roasted root vegetables, kale and feta cheese, and topped off with a citrus vinaigrette. The kids liked it a lot more than they thought they would!
We ended the program with a reflection about the role of food in our lives. The students had some pretty good insights to share. Here are some of our favorites:

Some of the most rewarding work Farm Direct does is supporting emerging businesses in Vermont. One of our newest customers is @oldbrickstore in Charlotte, a modern general store and restaurant that opened last fall. From Farm Direct, they source excellent local products like @butterworksfarmvt yogurt, @pitchforkpickle ferments, and @beancrafters veggie burgers.

A big thank you to High Mowing Organic Seeds for their generous donation! Students at the Jay Westfield Joint Elementary School planted their herb seeds and are growing them in their school greenhouse. Come June, the herbs will be planted in school gardens across Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom! 🌱
