Green Mountain Farm-to-School (GMFTS) is a leader in the growing farm-to-school movement in Vermont. Our mission is to strengthen local food systems in Vermont by promoting positive economic relationships, education, and access between schools, farms, and communities.

We create and sustain healthy communities by working across the food system with capacity building, resource development, and technical assistance through our Farm-to-School program, Farm Direct food hub, and Lunchbox food truck.

Launched by the Vermont Dept. of Agriculture, Food and Markets in September 2023, the Local Food for Schools Program provides funding to Vermont schools to purchase local, minimally processed foods to supplement their breakfast and lunch programs. This initiative has already benefited many schools and food producers throughout the Northeast Kingdom, where our food hub, Green Mountain Farm Direct, serves as the primary agency administering the program. It’s time for another installment of “reasons we love our small local farms!” This segment is all about crop diversity, and why it’s so important.

Large-scale industrialized farming and monoculture have resulted in a diminishing number of crop species in recent decades. This loss of diversity is a threat to food security as populations come to rely on fewer crops, and as these operations become more vulnerable to crop failure.

Increased crop diversity can protect against crop failure by acting as a buffer against pests and diseases, improving soil health, increasing nutrient cycling, and decreasing soil erosion. Crop diversity promotes crop resilience, or the ability of crops to withstand stressful conditions and recover quickly. This is critical as we encounter more shifting weather patterns and challenges from climate change.

Small farms can promote crop diversity by hosting a greater variety of crops, resulting in a more stable and resilient food system- not to mention a greater range of flavors and textures! #supportlocalfarms
